WE ARE FOCUSED ON A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO YOUR WELLBEING

Our definition of an Almighty Warrior:

A person who has a renewed mind, housed in a healthy, strong body, purposed to bring glory to God and serving others.

You were uniquely created to victoriously achieve your specific purpose. Called to run your race and claim your prize. To glorify God in all you do, and to be of service to others.

Alec’s personal instruction comes from Titus 2:7-8 and 1 Corinthians 9:27

7. And show your own self in all respects to be a pattern and a model of good deeds and works, teaching what is unadulterated, showing gravity [having the strictest regard for truth and purity of motive], with dignity and seriousness.

8. And let your instruction be sound and fit and wise and wholesome, vigorous and irrefutable and above censure, so that the opponent may be put to shame, finding nothing discrediting or evil to say about us.

But [like a boxer] I buffet my body [handle it roughly, discipline it by hardships] and subdue it, for fear that after proclaiming to others the Gospel and things pertaining to it, I myself should become unfit [not stand the test, be unapproved and rejected as a counterfeit]. – 1 Corinthians 9:27

Facts

  1. Love God, with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.
  2. Jesus died so you may live, now we need to live for Him.
  3. Love yourself, so you can love and serve others.
  4. Care for and nurture your body as an act of spiritual worship.
  5. Eat and drink to the glory of God.

There is an inter-dependant relationship between your spirit, soul and body.

Ideally, your body should be capable of acting on instruction from your mind, under the guidance of the spirit. Spirit -> soul -> body, they should be in alignment. Your body should be a useful residence for the Holy Spirit.

EXERCISE IS MEDICINE

  • It can treat and cure diseases.
  • Last week (talk 15) we spoke on Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass.
  • A sedentary life and poor nutrition (lack of sufficient protein) are the main causes.
  • 85% of 65-year-olds don’t do the bare minimum of Cardio.
  • 94% of 65-year-olds don’t do the bare minimum of strength training.
  • The good news is you are never too late to start.

LET’S START

  • Why do you want to be fit and strong?
  • Anything is better than nothing, get active.
  • Taking action fuels your faith.
  • Health -> mobility/ balance -> strength -> performance -> Physique.
  • If you are overweight (Height to waist ratio of more than 1:05), fix your nutrition/ diet (quantity, quality and frequency).
  • Your aim is a lifestyle change, to see yourself fit, healthy and strong. You did not get out of shape in a day and you can not get fit and strong instantly either. It takes discipline and consistent sustained effort, it is crucial to have a strong reason why.

Be not wise in your own eyes; reverently fear and worship the Lord and turn [entirely] away from evil. It shall be health to your nerves and sinews, and marrow and moistening to your bones. – Proverbs 3:7-8

  9. Builds higher self-esteem.
  10. Improved muscle strength and joint function.

EXERCISE IS THE ANSWER

The Human species evolved to perform and endure habitual physical activity. It is not surprising that its absence can lead to devastating physiological and clinical consequences.

Until recently few people regarded physical activity as a form of medicine capable of managing or treating disease.

Regular exercise may be the most powerful medicine we have, more powerful in most cases than any pill or procedure.” – Dr Robert Sallis (Kaiser Permanente)

Preventative and lifestyle medicine receded as doctors turned their attention to the treatment of illness with drugs and surgery.

Physical education began to focus more on sport and games catered to athletes.

Physical education wasn’t focused on individual health and medicine wasn’t focused on lifestyle and exercise anymore.

There is resistance to the idea that exercise can outperform pills and medical procedures.

“If exercise were a drug it would be classed as a wonder drug.”- Dame Sue Bailey (The Academy of Royal Medical Colleges)

IN CLOSING

Determine your “why”, why are you training? Remember clear intentions lead to elevated emotions, which impact your thoughts, which directs your behaviour.

Implement a habit around your desired behaviour, this will impact your thoughts, and in turn, elevate/ lift your emotions which will reinforce your intentions and bring you one step closer to actualizing your “why”.
